The Local 342 Safety, Education, Cultural and Activities (SECA) Fund Scholarship Committee is very pleased to have awarded $93,000 in college scholarships to high school graduates who are headed to college in the Fall of 2017!
Awarded the top scholarship award of $10,000 this year were Alexa Bristol and Anna San Bartolome, both 17-year-old high school graduates whose fathers are Local 342 Members.
Alexa is a graduate of Calhoun High School in Merrick, and she’s headed to Loyola College in New Orleans to study biology. She and her family laugh when they remember how Alexa was breading chicken cutlets for her high school graduation party and heard that she won a $10,000 scholarship from Local 342. Alexa said, “I was overwhelmed and I am forever grateful to Local 342 for this amazing opportunity.” Her mom said, “I almost fell over when I saw the check. It’s so generous and will help so much.”
Alexa’s father is James Bristol, a Meat Cutter and Shop Steward at Stop & Shop in Franklin Square. James added, “I’m very proud to be a Local 342 Member. We are forever grateful.”
Anna San Bartolome is a graduate of New Hyde Park Memorial High School who will attend the University of Michigan this year to major in Medical Engineering. Anna was already away at school for orientation when we spoke with her dad, Carlos San Bartolome, a Part-Time Meat Wrapper at Stop & Shop in Carle Place.
Carlos said he is so proud of Anna’s achievements and he thanked Local 342 for providing her with an amazing start for her college education. “I was so surprised and so grateful that Anna received such a generous award from Local 342. I can’t say thank you enough,” he said.
Additional college scholarships of at least $3,000 were also presented to the following high school graduates and high achievers who are headed to college this fall:
Anthony Sandoval, Genesis De Oleo, Brayeli Rodriguez, Dana Mannara, Kelsey Rodriguez, Baylee Sessa, Edwin Hansen, Pablo Raul Peguero, Jessica Longarello, Mehandie Anant, Erin O’Brien, Alexander Oleschuk, Kenneth Lund, Jackie Cigrrero, Zachary Logreira, Frank Colasurdo, John Berardi, Albert Hernandez, Joanna Camardo, Kerry Casey.
Every year, the Local 342 Safety, Education, Cultural and Activities Fund grants college scholarships to Local 342 Members’ children in amounts that can vary from $2,500 to $10,000. The awards depend on the number of students that apply and how much scholarship money is available in the Fund. The awards are based on need and achievement, and applications are reviewed by an independent judge and approved by the Local 342 Scholarship Committee.
Local 342 Members can visit the SECA Education page here to learn about the scholarships and tuition assistance available to you and your dependant students through your union membership.
Local 342 wishes the very best of luck to all our Local 342 students headed to school this fall!
